Unit 10
Animals is the wild
1-Which animals have scales?
-Lizards, crocodiles, fish,..
2-Which animals have fur?
– Rabbits, cats , dogs,..
3-What are birds covered in?
-Feathers.
4-Mention two animals that have adapted to extreme heat and extreme cold.
-Sand cats have adapted to the heat in Egypt.
-Polar bears have adapted to the extreme cold of the North Pole area.
5-How are the mountains in Sinai different from the Egyptian desert?
-They are sometimes covered in snow; but the desert is very hot.
6-Why do sand cats have thick fur on their feet?
-To protect them from the hot sand.
7-Why don't sand cats need to find water?
-Because they get moisture from their prey.
8-Why don't we often see sand cats?
-Because they sleep underground during the day and only come out to hunt at night.
9-Where do polar bears live?
-On the ice around the North Pole.
10-How do polar bears keep warm?

-To protect themselves from the rain.

-It looks like a very large cat covered in white, yellow or orange fur.

-They live in eastern and southern Africa, northern India, on the edge of deserts or in forests.

-They use the open space to catch their prey. They have sharp teeth and they can run fast.(80 km an hour)

-Yes, I like the lion because they are very proud animals. It is a sociable animal because it lives in groups.
-No, I don't like the lion because it is a very dangerous animal. It eats meat of other large animals and people.

-They are found in hot countries. They live in rainforests. They have dangerous animals because they have sharp teeth.

2-What do you know about Daniel Defoe?
-He was born in London in 1660. His father was a butcher. He started his newspaper in 1704. He died in 1731.
3-What do you know about his family?
-His wife was Mary Tuffley and they had two sons and seven daughters.
4-What do you know about Robinson Crusoe?
-He was a sailor who had many exciting adventures.
5-Did his parents want him to be a sailor?
-No.
6-When did he leave England? How?
-In 1651 on a ship.
7-What happened to him during his voyage?
-He was shipwrecked on a desert island because of a terrible storm.
8-What happened to the other sailor?
-They all died but Robinson Crusoe was the only survivor.
9-What did he save from the ship before it sank?
-He saved tools, guns and other useful things.
10-What did Robinson Crusoe do on the island?
-He built a safe home, hunted animals and grew crops.
11-Who were his friends?
-A bird and some cats.
12- Why did Robinson Crusoe feel lonely?
-Because he was the only human being on the island.

-He a human footprint in the sand.

-He discovered that people from the mainland sometimes visited the island and killed their prisoners there.

-So that when the bread is ready, the ovens are the right temperature.
3-Want does a cleaner do?
-He cleans the floors and the toilets and empties all the bins.
4-What does a fireman do?
-He puts out fires. He goes to road accidents, especially where people have to be cut out of their vehicles.
5-Why doesn't a fireman think of danger when he is working?
-Because he is too busy rescuing people.
6-What does a flight attendant do?
-He gets passengers drinks and serves food.
7-What does the flight attendant dislike?
-He dislikes staying in hotels in other countries.
8-What does a carpenter do?
-He makes and repairs wooden objects like doors, windows, tables, chairs and floors.

-She works for One World Travel company.
10-Why did Leila apply for this job?
-Because she wanted to work for a modern company that works with foreign companies. The company offers her training.

-Secondary Education Certificate.

-They are mammals because they give birth to a baby and feed it on milk.

-Using their huge tails.

-The front legs are short but the back legs are powerful, long and large.

-So that the lion couldn't escape.

-It can do very fast and very accurately.

-There are millions of computers in offices and homes across the world. Many ordinary people have one or more computers connected by the internet to shops, banks and offices.
7-How can people make use of the internet?
-People can do shopping, pay their bills and do studying, and doing many other things by computer.

-They have made people's lives much healthier and happier. Doctors could find cures for some incurable diseases.

-It helps doctors to see what is happening inside our bodies.

-Watching too much television wastes time and results in poor eyesight. It introduces much violence. It also makes people lazy.

17-What new ways of farming are there that help produce better food?
-They are: disease-resistant crops – more intensive use of land – better irrigation
18-What does "better food" mean?
-It means food that is more nutritious/healthy.

-More than 90 pyramids.
20-During what months were the pyramids built? Why?
-Between July and November. Because the land was under water and the farmers couldn't work in their fields.
21-How did they get the huge pieces of stone up the pyramids?
-They built ramps up the sides of the pyramids and pulled the stones up the ramps.
22-Why do you think they wanted the pyramids to shine brightly?
-To attract people's attention.
23-What can we learn from people in the past?
-We can learn patience, loyalty, co-operation and hard work. We can learn that many things are possible even without modern technology.

Unit 14
Jules Verne
1-When and where was Verne born?
-In 1828. In a port called Nantes in northern France.
2-When did he die?
-In 1905.
3-Why was Verne interested in travel and exploration?
-Because Nantes was always busy with ships coming and going.
4-How do you know that Verne was interested in travel and exploration?
-When he was young, he wanted to travel so much that he hid on a ship as it was leaving Nantes for America.
5-What did Verne study after leaving school?
-He studied to be a lawyer.
6-Why did Verne's father stop for paying for his son's studies?
-Because Verne spent a lot of time writing stories about fantastic journeys.
7-How many books did Verne write every year?
-Two books.
8-Mention some of Verne's stories?
- His first story, which was called Five Weeks in a Balloon, came out in 1863.
His most well-known book, that he wrote in 1873, was Around the World in Eighty Days. It first came out in a magazine.
His last novel came out after his death. It was called The Lighthouse at the End of the World.
9-Why did Verne write stories?
-To earn money to live on.
10-Why do many people call him the "father of science fiction"?
-Because he wrote about air travel, space travel and submarines before planes, rockets or submarines were used.

12-Who are the main characters?
-Phileas Fogg. A rich man.
-Passeparout. Fogg's servant.

14-What is the condition to win the bet?
-They will have to return at the same time on December 21.

-Passepartout. Fogg won the bet.

-Fogg was a good master because he rescued Passepartout when he was kidnapped as a result they got to New York late and missed their boat to Liverpool.
-Passepartout was a good and faithful servant because he trusted his master and he didn't help Fix to arrest him.

Phobias
1-What do these words mean( a phobia-dizzy-panic-irrational-fear-therapist)?
-A phobia : a strong unreasonable fear or hatred of a particular thing.
-Dizzy: feeling that you are losing your balance.
-Panic : sudden strong feeling of fear or anxiety.
-Irrational : not using reason or clear thinking.
-Fear : the feeling you get when you are afraid something bad will happen.
-Therapist : someone whose job is to do a particular type of therapy (treatment of a
mental or physical illness)

2-How are phobias different from fears?
-A phobia is stronger than a fear, and is irrational.
3-How can phobias affect people's lives?
-They make them frightened to do normal things.
4-Why don't persons with phobias panic?
-Because they feel in control of the situation with the help of the therapist.
5-What happens if someone loses control of the situation?
-He may feel panic.
6-Why do some persons with phobias need medicine?
-To help them relax before treatment.
7-How can treatment be done?
-It can be done individually or in groups.
8-Why do you think it takes a few sessions for patients to realize they don't need to be afraid?
-Because it takes time to build up their confidence in the therapist and the methods.
9-How can a computer programme help patients with phobias?
-The patient is put into a virtual situation with the thing he/she fears.
10-What happens after the patients with phobias have a few sessions?
-They realize that the thing they are afraid of can't hurt them.
11-What is the role of the therapist in the treatment?
-He should remain calm and help the patient to relax.

1-What are satellites?
-They are devices which orbit the earth.
2-What are communication satellites used for?
-Communication satellites are used for sending television pictures and phone calls.
3-What are navigation satellites used for?
-Navigation satellites "sat-nav" can help car drivers and pilots to know exactly where they are. It helps you to avoid traffic jam.
4-What are weather forecasting satellites used for?
-Weather forecasting satellites have made it easier to forecast the weather accurately, and to warn people about forest fires or floods. They can help us to find water under the ground.
5-What does using satellites to transmit television pictures mean?
-People all over the world can watch programmes from other countries.
6-Who needs accurate weather forecasts?
-Farmers, sailors, fishermen, pilots,….
7-How can students make use of satellite TV channels?
-They can watch the educational programmes.
8-How are satellites phones better than mobile phones?
-Because they can be used in places with no radio signals.
9-What are the advantages of satellites TV?
-It gives people more programmes to choose from.
10-What are the disadvantages of satellites TV?
-Some of the programmes are poor quality. People may spend much time watching TV.

Sherlock Holmes
1-What do you know about Sherlock Holmes?
-He was a fictional detective who was invented by the writer, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
2-Where/When did Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr Watson live?
-At 221 Baker Street. They lived there between 1881 and 1894. Now it is Sherlock Holmes's Museum.
3-When was the house built?
-It was built in 1815.
4-Who was Mrs Hudson?
-She was Holmes and Watson's landlady.
5- What was the character based on?
-A doctor who once helped the writer.
6-Who visits it now?
-Million of Sherlock Holmes's fans from all over the world.
7-Who protects the house?
-The government.
8-Where were many crimes studied and solved?
-On the first floor of the house.
9-Where was Dr Watson's bedroom?
-It was on the second floor, at the back.
10-Where was Mrs Hudson's room?
-It was on the second floor, at the front.
11-Where can you see models of famous scenes from Holmes's stories?
-On the third floor.
12-Why was it impossible to go up the third floor?
-Because it was being decorated.
13-Why did Mr Mortimer visit Sherlock Holmes?
-He wanted his advice before he went to see his friend Sir Henry Baskerville.
14-Who was Sir Henry Baskerville?
-He was the last member of the Baskerville family.
15-What was Sir Henry Baskerville going to inherit?
-He was going to inherit his family home, in the west of England.
16-Why was Mr Mortimer worried about Sir Henry?
-Because there was an old legend about a wild dog called "the Hound of Baskerville.
17-What is a Hound?
-It is a hunting dog.
18-What does this legend say?
-It says that this dog will kill anyone called Baskerville.
19-What happened to Sir Charles Baskerville?
-He was found dead in his garden with a terrified expression on his face. Near to his body, there were footprints of an enormous dog. He had no physical injuries.
20-Why do you think Sir Charles had a terrified expression on his face?
-Because he was very frightened when he died.


21-What did Holmes do?
-He went to Baskerville to investigate.
22-Who was the criminal?
-Stapleton, a cousin of Baskerville.
23-Why did he commit his crimes?
-To inherit the family house.
24-How do you think Stapleton make use of the legend?
-He used a hound dog to kill the first person it saw as he did feed it. (it was very hungry)
25-How did Holmes and Watson solve the crime?
-They shot the dog and Stapleton drowned while trying to escape.
26-Why do you think Conan wanted to be a doctor?
-His father was a doctor.
-He wanted to help sick people, especially in countries where there were few doctors.

Holidays with a difference

1-How are James and his family going to spend their summer holiday?
-They are going diving in the Red Sea for five days.

-For a fortnight. With his aunt and uncle.
3-Where do James's aunt and uncle work?
-They work for a dolphin conservation society in Greece.

-Seeing dolphins in the wild.

-With an organization called Global Challenge with her elder brother. To help old people or work with children.

-They are adventure holidays that also help communities.

-He is from Australia.

-Because there was no television and a strange language.
